Five Cleveland Cultural Things Not to Be Missed

The city of Cleveland, Ohio is full to the brim of cultural things to see and do. Let’s take a look at what Cleveland has to offer in terms of performing arts, music, and literature.

Performing Arts

Cleveland has the second-largest performing arts center in the whole of the U.S. – Playhouse Square. This is second only to the Lincoln Center in New York City.

In Playhouse Square, you will find the Ohio Theatre, Hannah Theater, Allen Theater, Palace Theater, and State Theater. This is a hub for many Broadway Musicals and the city has produced lots of well-known actors as well as the renowned comedian Bob Hope.

Elsewhere in Cleveland, there is the Karamu House. This is America’s oldest African-American theater and dates back to the 1920s.

Music

Cleveland is also home to one of the world’s best orchestras, The Cleveland Orchestra. This is considered to be the finest in the U.S. During the winter, the orchestra plays at Severance Hall, in University Circle, and during the summer, it can be found at Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls.

During the 60s and 70s, Cleveland gained a reputation in rock music and even hosted the World Series of Rock from 1974 to 1980. If this is something you’re interested in, visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, located in downtown, Cleveland. This is a museum that celebrates the most influential and best-known figures, artists, producers, and engineers of rock and roll music.

Jazz is also popular in Cleveland and has a long history here. The Tri-C Jazz Fest is held in Cleveland every year. For jazz lovers, Bop Stop on Detroit Avenue is a great place to pay a visit.

Polka has been and continues to be, popular in Cleveland. There is even a sub-genre of polka called Cleveland-style. For those interested, there is the Polka Hall of Fame, which is worth a visit. This traces the Cleveland-style polka from its roots in Slovenia in the 19th century, through the factory and mining towns of America, to the post-war years.

If you like piano music, The Velvet Tango Room is a great location. From Monday to Thursday there are pianists from 9 pm and the cocktails are great too!

Literature

The modernist poet, Hart Crane, was born not far from Cleveland. The memorial park along the Cuyahoga left bank is dedicated to him. There is also a marker where his childhood home sat in University Circle. Elsewhere, there is a statue behind the Kelvin Smith Library at Case Western Reserve University’s Campus.

If you’re into poetry, there are regular readings at many Cleveland bookstores and coffee shops.
If you’re visiting in July, the Cleveland Inkubator is a great 4-day festival that is free. It’s for writers and readers alike and offers workshops, keynote speeches, book swaps, and open mic sessions.

Another great event is hosted by the Maltz Performing Arts Center and is called the Writer’s Center Stage. This is a series of speeches and appearances by famous writers. Their website has a calendar of events where you can purchase tickets.

Hand-Picked by Arnold Palmer

We brought our Big Black Photobooth to a gorgeous wedding on a golf course, and not just any golf course, a course created by Arnold Palmer himself. The center is surrounded by beautiful, vast golf courses and trees, with ponds and lakes scattered across the grounds. Arnold Pamler designed the 18-hole private golf course, which guests can use too! After golfing the course, Palmer said, “I don’t think you will ever see three holes better than the last three here.” The Oasis Golf Club and Conference Center has a little something for everyone; professionals like Arnold or the occasional novice golfer.

Can a Barn Wedding be Elegant?

With barn weddings becoming increasingly popular, people are wondering if achieving the charming, rustic style requires sacrificing an element of elegance (dealing with heat, dust etc). Well, I visited a wedding barn over the weekend that proved to me it is possible to achieve both. It was a scenic drive to JLH Wedding Barn, with acres of farmland, crops and animals, (I passed a pasture of cows on my way down the gravel driveway to the barn).

Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church

We were ecstatic to be invited to capture the fun at Melanie and George’s wedding reception, this past July. Melanie and George were married at the newly renovated University of Dayton Chapel (absolutely stunning) and held their reception at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in downtown Dayton, right next to the Dayton Art Institute. If you haven’t been to a reception held in this church, you are missing out! With plenty of room for a huge dance floor, long bridal party table, photo booth, and more, it is a great location if you have a larger guest list to accommodate.

Enclosed VS Open Air Booths

Photo booths are a great way to capture the moment for any occasion, including birthday parties, weddings or class reunions.  When renting a photo booth now-a-days, a major question that comes to mind is what style of photo booth would best fit your event? In the photo booth market, most photo booth vendors will only provide one style of photo booth; while some of the top photo booth companies have several choices. The most popular choices in today’s photo booth industry are Open-Air and Enclosed Booths. Both booth styles are great options, but which one is the perfect style for your event?

Top of the Market

This past weekend, Picture Perfect Photobooth Rentals was invited back to Top of the Market Banquet Center for Sarah and Chad’s wedding reception.  I love bringing the photo booth here! Portable photo booths can have their issues, and from start to finish, Top of the Market makes it a breeze! The owners transformed this retired warehouse, located close to Downtown Dayton, into a gorgeous event center for weddings, birthday parties, and so much more. I have no trouble getting the photo booth cart up the ramps or through the doors, as the venue is easily accessible on both sides of the building.

Boonshoft Museum of Discovery

This weekend Picture Perfect was invited back to Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, located right here, in Dayton, Ohio. If you want an out-of- the-world experience, this place is what you’re looking for! The beautiful bride and groom were wed under the stars of Boonshoft’s Planetarium. Their guests later convened for dinner with a projection of our Earth as the room’s centerpiece. With a venue as stellar as this, it’s only fitting to bring an equally amazing photo booth! Good thing they called Picture Perfect. The photo booth was up and running in no time! They had requested Picture Perfect’s open air booth style with a silver backdrop. I stood back to marvel at how well our booth meshed with the layout and look of the room.
