The city was incorporated in 1968. Till the era of 1950s, the area was known to be an agricultural hub and its earlier name was Sterling Township. The 1st Mayor of the city was Gerald Donovan. The original name of the city was Sterling, but there was another city in Arenac County with the same name, so Heights was added to the name to avoid any similarities. In state of Michigan, it is the 4th largest city.
The city has many historical and interesting places to visit like an historic home from 1867 named Upton House, which is also listed by the National Register of Historic Places. The other interesting and fun filled places to visit are Detroit Symphony Orchestra Hall, Crocker House Museum (Mt. Clemens), Museum of Natural History (Ann Arbor), Detroit Historical Museum, Motown Museum, African Safari Wildlife Park.
